A free shoppable lookbook (featuring size inclusive brands!)
Plus the essential denim education you need to find your favourite new pair of jeans for fall!
Denim is a perennial wardrobe staple, but this fall, it’s taking on fresh shapes and unexpected details that feel both timeless and modern. For those of us navigating the fashion landscape beyond straight sizes, the denim market is finally starting to reflect a broader range of bodies. While availability still is not perfect, there are more options than ever that center inclusivity and good fit.
Below, I’ve rounded up some plus size friendly denim looks for fall (most of these options also carry straight sizing - so still take a browse if you aren’t plus sized!), and where you can shop them.
But first, let’s dive into a little bit of denim education, to make your online shopping experience a little bit less intimidating…
Denim Sizing Considerations (The need-to-know basics!)
With a fabric measuring tape, make sure you take the following measurements:
1. Rise: The distance from the crotch of your jeans to the top of the jean along the fly. The perfect rise is right under the smallest part of your waist. People with a short torso may favour a mid-rise (9-10 in), while those with a longer torso or weight in the midsection may favour a higher rise. It’s just much more comfortable. Not all retailers have the same interpretation of ‘high rise’ or ‘mid rise’ so knowing the rise measurement that fits your body will set you up for success. I am a US size 22/24, and I carry weight in my midsection. I prefer a rise of (at minimum) 14 inches and up to around 20 inches. This is an area not talked about often enough in the styling sphere. Most people give rise suggestions to plus sized folks that are just too short.
2. Inseam: The distance from the crotch of the jean to the bottom of the leg along the inner seam. Knowing what inseam you need will ensure they are not too long or short. You should also know your desired inseams when wearing flats and heels (if applicable to your wardrobe). When shopping online, the rise and inseam information is often provided in the details portion of the garment!
Other Factors To Consider:
1. Fabrication: Denim will either be 100% cotton (rigid) or have an elastane component (stretch). Those with curves (whether plus sized or not) may prefer a pair with some stretch to it to harmonize with their curves.
2. Whiskering: These add width to the body! For example, they may be great for someone looking to widen the appearance of a narrow hip.
3. Alterations: A tailor can hem jeans, take in gapping in the back, even make a leg opening more narrow. If your denim is more than 2 sizes too large, it may change the shape too much, so keep this in mind when you are considering altering vs. returning.
4. Length: As a quick reference, wide and flare leg jeans should graze the ground in heels or flats. Barrel and straight leg styles should hit around the ankle in flats or heels. Choose an inseam that reflects not only your height, but your shoe!

Let’s get into it…
The Flared Jean
This stye is great for accentuating curves. It should be fitted through the thigh and flare out. The flare should be proportional to the size of your thigh and the length should graze the ground with shoes. This style looks best with some sort of heel! And the burgundy is chef’s kiss!
The Denim Midi Skirt
Denim is being used for styles that stretch beyond the traditional silhouettes we've seen in the past. This midi skirt with volume has a bohemian feel fit for any function from desk to dinner. The skirt is intentionally styled with a pair of tall boots for a streamlined look to avoid any gap between the top of the boot and bottom of the skirt. For a more casual look, simply swap the skirt for a pair of wide leg jeans and your favorite bootie, flat or pump. A size inclusive dupe for the top is linked. Try buttoning it all the way up, or leaving open with a loosely draped silk neck tie!
The Patch Pocket Jean
With a little bit of texural '70s inspired flair, this is the perfect way to carry a spring/summer favourite into cooler weather. Brighten up the look with a pop of pastel yellow, and play with silver hardware throughout - a beautiful, and slightly more unexpected - pairing with the olive green and burgundy. I included a cute little hair clip for those with longer hair, because your hair worn up looks great with a higher neckline or a big scarf. It brings balance to the look.
The Wide Leg
Sophisticated, classic, casual yet chic, and airy. Styled here with a classic button down and sweater draped over the shoulder! This look is neutral, but plays with cooler tones throughout. I love an angular bootie with a wider leg. The sharpness breaks up the fabric, and brings visual balance. Yes, these tiny details make ALL the difference!
The Straight Leg
Versatile enough to pair with any shoe, but styled here with a bootie! When styling booties and denim, make sure the shaft is completely tucked up under your jeans and not showing any skin. If you can see skin, either your boots are too low on the ankle (which, if it matters to you, may read as a "dated" style! If you don’t care, then rock what you love!) or your jeans may be too short.
The Cropped
While this style is still considered a wide leg, its opening is more modest, perfect for those who feel unsure about choosing a style with more volume. I work with a lot of clients who are initially weary about the wider looks, so this a great jumping off point for experimentation. This pair in particular is designed to be a bit on the cropped side, making it perfect with a flat shoe. Cropped styles may feel too cropped for taller folks or you may have to choose 'tall' if offered.
